Audition requirements for wind instruments

Bassoon

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6)

  • One scale;
  • Long tones;
  • One short piece such as one from Breeze-Easy Recital Pieces for Bassoon with Piano Accompaniment / compiled and arranged by John Kinyon (Witmark and Sons).

Preparatory school (secondary school)

  • Scales and arpeggios, including knowledge of the chromatic scale fingerings;
  • A study from the Giampieri method or from Weissenborn Bassoon Studies8, volume 2;
  • A piece from Solos for the Bassoon Player by Sol Schoenbach, Humoresque35 no. 8 by Glière, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • All major and minor scales and arpeggios, broken arpeggios, chromatic scales spanning the whole range of the instrument;
  • A study from Weissenborn, volume 2, or Milde Études sur les gammes et arpèges;
  • One piece such as Michael Haydn Concertino, Glière Humoresque35, Galliard Sonata, Ibert Carignane, Pierné Solo de concert, or two movements of a sonata by Boismortier or Bourdeau, Premier Solo, or equivalent.

Undergraduate studies

The applicant must be finishing their CEGEP studies or be at the undergraduate level.

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios, broken arpeggios, dominant 7th arpeggios, chromatic scales, and scales in thirds;
  • A study by Gambaro, Jancourt, or Milde, such as Concert Studies, volumes 1 and 2;
  • Two movements of a concerto by Weber, Mozart, Jacob or one movement of a sonata by Devienne or Fasch, or one short piece such as the Tansman Sonatine, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

The applicant must be finishing their undergraduate studies, or be at the graduate level.

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios, broken arpeggios, dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios, scales in thirds, whole tone scale, and chromatic scale;
  • A study from Milde Concert Studies, volume 1 or volume 2, Piard 90 Etudes, Orefici Bravoura studies, or equivalent;
  • Two movements of a concerto by Hummel, Mozart, Jacob, or one movement of the Saint-Saëns Sonata and a short piece such as Introduction and Scherzo by Jeanjean, Sonatine by Tansman, or equivalent.

Clarinet

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6)

  • C, F and G major and A-minor scales spanning one octave (or more) with corresponding arpeggios;
  • A study from Jacques Lancelot’s 20 études faciles, or equivalent;
  • A piece from Jacques Lancelot’s La clarinette classique, volume A, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 1 and 2)

  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and thirds up to 1 flat and 1 sharp (or more), slurred and detached;
  • A study from the following books: Jacques Lancelot 20 études faciles, or Melodious and Progressive Studies (Demnitz, Dont, Klozé, Jacob, Nocentini, Baermann, etc.), or equivalent;
  • One piece, or one movement of a piece.

Preparatory school (secondary 3, 4, and 5)

  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and thirds up to 2 flats and 2 sharps (or more), slurred and detached;
  • A study from the following books: Périer Le débutant clarinettiste, Jeanjean 20 études progressives et mélodiques, Rose 32 or 40 études, Melodious and Progressive Studies (Demnitz, Dont, Klozé, Jacob, Nocentini, Baerman, etc.), or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces or two movements from two different pieces.

CEGEP

  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and thirds up to 4 flats and 4 sharps;
  • One or two studies of the applicant’s choice;
  • Two contrasting pieces: either movements from two different pieces or two movements from the same piece.

Undergraduate studies

  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and thirds up to 5 flats and 5 sharps;
  • One or two studies;
  • Two consecutive movements of a concerto;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice, or one movement of a piece.

Graduate studies

  • A virtuosic study by Kovacs, Jeanjean, Paganini, Marasco, or equivalent, or one piece for solo clarinet;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice, two consecutive movements of the Poulenc sonata, or equivalent;
  • Two consecutive movements of a Mozart, Weber, or Spohr concerto, or equivalent.

French Horn

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6, secondary 1 or 2)

  • Scales in C, F, B-flat, and G;
  • A study by Horner, or equivalent;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice from Kaufmann, M. Jones, S. Sarton, C. Phillips, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 3, 4 and 5)

  • Scales in C, F, B-flat, D, G, and E-flat over 2 octaves;
  • A study by Horner or Kopprasch;
  • One or two pieces of the applicant’s choice from the following options: S. Lawton The Young Player, Kaufmann 12 Solos for Horn, M. Jones Solos for the Horn, C. Phillips Classical and Romantic Albums for the Horn, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • A study by Kopprasch, Kling, Gallay, or Maxime-Alphonse (volume 1, 2, or 3);
  • A fast movement from Mozart’s Concerto no 1 or Concerto no 3;
  • A contrasting piece of the applicant’s choice.

Undergraduate and graduate studies

  • A study by Reynolds, Gallay, or Maxime-Alphonse (volume 4 or 5);
  • The first movement of Mozart’s Concerto n 2 or no. 4;
  • The first movement of Richard Strauss’ Concerto n 1;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice in a contrasting style.

Euphonium

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6, secondary 1, 2, or 3)

  • Scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats, from low F to high G in bass clef;
  • A study from the Imperial Method, op. 8, the Arban or the Rubank methods, intermediate level, or Standard of Excellence, volumes 2 and 3 (Yamaha);
  • One piece, either Barnes The Young Maestro or Handel Arm, Arm, Ye Brave, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4 and 5)

  • Scales and arpeggios up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, from low F to high B-flat in bass clef;
  • A study from the Arban or the Rubank methods, intermediate level;
  • One piece, either A. Dedrick A touch of tuba or G.P. Berlioz Air Gai, or equivalent.

CEGEP, undergraduate, and graduate studies

Flute

Preparatory school (elementary school and secondary 1)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 2 sharps and 2 flats spanning 1 octave, slurred and detached;
  • A study from Méthode Altès, Elementary method for flute by H. Voxman or Beginner’s Practice Book by T. Wye, volume 1 or 2, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces by L. Moyse from 40 Little Pieces in Progressive Order for Beginner Flutists, or two movements of a Handel sonata, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 2, 3, or 4)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats spanning two octaves, slurred and detached;
  • A study from Cavally Melodious and Progressive Studies, volume 1 or Berbiguier 18 Etudes, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting movements from a Baroque or Classical piece by Handel, Bach, Couperin, Marcello, Telemann, Vivaldi, or equivalent;
  • One piece from another period, such as Cavally, Fauré, Bizet, Perilhou, Gluck, Andersen, Pessard, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 5)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 4 sharps and 4 flats spanning two octaves, slurred and detached;
  • A study by Cavally (volume 2), Boehm, Andersen, or equivalent;
  • The first movement of a Classical concerto by Danzi, Haydn, Mozart, Stamitz, or equivalent;
  • One piece from another period, such as Chaminade, Enesco, Fauré, Gaubert, Hindemith, Poulenc, Taffanel, Perilhou, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 7 sharps and 7 flats spanning the whole range of the instrument, slurred and detached;
  • A study by Cavally (volume 2), Boehm, Andersen, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting movements from a Baroque piece;
  • A fast movement from a Classical concerto;
  • Another contrasting piece.

Undergraduate studies

  • Orchestral excerpts: Ravel Daphnis et Chloé and Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the book by Jeanne Baxtresser;
  • Two contrasting movements by J.S. Bach;
  • A piece of the applicant’s choice by a French composer, such as F. Martin Ballade, Dutilleux Sonatine, Sancan Sonatine, Poulenc Sonate, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

  • Orchestral excerpts: Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf and Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune;
  • The first movement of a Mozart concerto of the applicant’s choice;
  • Two contrasting movements of a J.S. Bach sonata of the applicant’s choice;
  • One piece for solo flute;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice, such as the Ibert concerto, the Liebermann concerto or sonata, the Jolivet concerto, the Reinecke concerto, Chant de Linos by Jolivet, Introduction and Variations, D.802 (Op. 160) by Schubert, or equivalent.

Oboe

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1, 2, or 3)

An audition program of the applicant’s choice comprising:

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 2 sharps and 2 flats;
  • Études mélodiques et articulations by Barret, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 2 sharps and 2 flats;
  • A melodic study by Barret, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting movements of a piece such as Telemann, Handel or Lœillet sonatas, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 5)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 4 sharps and 4 flats;
  • A study by Ferling, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting movements of a piece such as Saint-Saëns Sonate, or one movement of a concerto by Haydn, Marcello or Cimarosa, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 4 sharps and 4 flats;
  • A technical study (Barret, Ferling, Brod, Luft, or equivalent);
  • Two contrasting movements of a Baroque piece;
  • The fast movement of a concerto or a sonata.

Undergraduate studies

  • Scales, scales in thirds, and major and minor arpeggios in all keys;
  • A study by Luft, Loyon, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting movements of a Baroque piece;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice by a French composer such as Dutilleux, Poulenc, Saint-Saëns, Sancan, or other;
  • Mozart Concerto in C major, KV 314, 1st movement (with cadenza).

Graduate studies

Requirements are the same as for undergraduate studies with the addition of the following orchestral excerpts:

  • Brahms: Violin concerto, 2nd movement;
  • Ravel: Le tombeau de Couperin, 1st movement;
  • Rossini: La Scala di Seta overture, complete.

Saxophone

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1 or 2)

  • C major and F major scales;
  • Long tones, detached tones, varied dynamics;
  • One or two studies from Mule 24 Études faciles d’après Samie.

Preparatory school (secondary 3)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 2 sharps and 2 flats;
  • One or two studies from Études faciles et progressives by Guy Lacour, or equivalent;
  • Two pieces from Le nouveau saxophone classique, volume A, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4 and 5)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats;
  • One or two studies from Études faciles et progressives by Guy Lacour, or 48 Studies by Ferling, or equivalent;
  • One or two pieces from the following choices: Rueff Chanson et passepied, Lantier Sicilienne, Busser Asturias, Jolivet Fantaisie impromptue or Classical sonatas by Handel, Telemann, or Bach, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats;
  • One or two studies by Ferling or Berbiguier;
  • Two contrasting pieces.

Undergraduate studies

  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and thirds up to 5 sharps and 5 flats;
  • A concerto or a sonata;
  • A work of the applicant’s choice.

Graduate studies

  • A study by Bozza, Lacour, Massis, Loyon, or equivalent;
  • A concerto or a sonata by Glazounov, Creston, Ibert, or Rueff;
  • A work of the applicant’s choice.

Trombone

Preparatory school (secondary 1 or 2)

  • Two major scales and arpeggios of the applicant’s choice (ex. B-flat and C);
  • Two studies or contrasting pieces, such as Arban pages 17 to 29, Dubois Pour le trombone élémentaire, H.C. Smith First Solos for the Trombone Player, Willy van Dorsselaer Pour la promotion, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 3 to 5)

  • Two major or minor scales and arpeggios of the applicant’s choice (ex. B-flat major and C minor);
  • Two studies or contrasting pieces, such as Arban pages 29 to 43, Fink Studies in Legato, Clérisse Thème de Concours, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios;
  • Two contrasting studies, movements, or pieces such as Rochut vol. 1, Barat Andante and Allegro, or equivalent.

Undergraduate and graduate studies

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios spanning minimum 2 octaves;
  • Two contrasting studies of the applicant’s choice such as Rochut vol. 1, 2, or 3, Kopprasch, vol. 1 or 2;
  • Two contrasting pieces or movements such as Bozza Ballade, Wagenseil Concerto, or equivalent.

Graduate studies only

  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Trumpet

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1 or 2)

  • One scale of the applicant’s choice, or major scales and arpeggios, slurred and detached, up to 2 sharps or flats, depending on the abilities of the applicant;
  • Slurs;
  • One or two studies of the applicant’s choice from the Arban or Rubank method books, or equivalent;
  • One piece of the applicant’s choice, such as Legend by V.Shelukov or The technician by Endresen;
  • Sight reading.

Preparatory school (secondary 3)

  • Major scales spanning 1 octave: C, D, B-flat, F, G with corresponding arpeggios, slurred and detached;
  • One easy study, slurred or detached, from Sigmund Hering 40 Progressives Etudes n 1 to 5, from the Arban method pages 13 and 14, or from Getchell’s First Book of Practical Studies, or equivalent;
  • One piece demonstrating the applicant’s abilities and potential, such as M. Endresen The dancer, Wurmser Petit solo, Bach Bist du bei mir, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4 and 5)

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats slurred and detached, spanning one octave, except for G and A, which should be played over 2 octaves;
  • A study from Sigmund Hering 40 Progressives Etudes, Getchell Second Book of Practical Studies 6 to 15, Arban method pages 13 and 14, 50 Recreational Studies no. 10 to 20, or equivalent;
  • A piece by Julien Porret such as Concertino no 1 or Concertino no. 3, or a piece from Getchell Master Solos, Intermediate Level, or from Fitzgerald Scarlatti Suite, or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios;
  • Two studies from Sigmund Hering 40 Progressives Etudes, nos. 15 to 30, or equivalent;
  • One piece from the repertoire of various composers such as Guillaume Balay, J.E. Barat, J.G. Ropartz, Jeanjean, or equivalent.

Undergraduate studies

  • Major and minor scales and arpeggios over 2 octaves depending on the key;
  • A study by Hering, Bousquet, Arban, Charlier, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces such as G. Hue, F. Thomé, A. Goedicke, J. Hubeau, Hummel, Haydn, Arutunian, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

  • Two contrasting studies such as Charlier, Bitsch, Sabarich, Arban, or equivalent;
  • Two contrasting pieces such as G. Enesco, K. Kennan, E. Bozza, H. Stevens, H. Tomasi, Haydn, Hummel, Neruda, or equivalent.

Tuba

Preparatory school (up to elementary grade 6 or secondary 1 or 2)

  • Major scales and arpeggios of the applicant’s choice;
  • Studies or exercises from Arban, Rubank, or equivalent;
  • One piece from the following: Sometimes I feel like a motherless child (negro spiritual, arr. James Barnes), The Tubaman by William Bell, Old American Patriotic Song (William Billing, arr. James Barnes), or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 3)

  • Scales and arpeggios up to 3 sharps and 3 flats, from low B-flat to high G in bass clef;
  • A study from Méthode impériale, op. 8 (n1, 2, 3) or from the Arban method (p. 20 and 21, nos. 11 to 15), or from the Vandercook method (nos. 1 to 4), or equivalent;
  • One piece by J.S. Bach, Air and Bourrée (arr. Paul Tanner), Haydn Medley (arr. William Bell), Work Song (by James Barnes), Tomorrow’s Waltz (by W. Bell), The Spartan, or equivalent.

Preparatory school (secondary 4 and 5)

  • Scales and arpeggios up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, from low F to high B in bass clef;
  • A study from the Arban method (p. 20, n11, 13, 14; p. 21, no. 16; pp. 21 to 30, nos. 1, 2), from the Vandercook method (nos. 5 to 8), or equivalent;
  • One piece such as Frackenpohl Concertino, Paul Tanner Weather Vane, James Barnes Work Song or Whislin’ Tune, Carmen Excerpts by Georges Bizet (arr. William Bell), or equivalent.

CEGEP

  • Major and harmonic minor scales and arpeggios spanning 2 octaves;
  • Two contrasting studies from the following choices: Arban method, Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies, Blazhevich, Bordogni, or equivalent.
  • Two contrasting movements of a piece, sonata, or concerto of the applicant’s choice;
  • Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the following choices: Ride of the Valkyries (R. Wagner), Die Meistersinger (R. Wagner), Symphony No. 1 (G. Mahler), Symphony No. 4 (A. Bruckner), or equivalent.

Undergraduate studies

  • Major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales and arpeggios spanning 2 to 3 octaves;
  • Two contrasting studies from the following choices: Arban Études caractéristiques, Blazhevich 70 Studies for Bb Tuba, Cimera 73 Advanced Tuba Studies, Bordogni, or equivalent;
  • Five contrasting orchestral excerpts of the applicant’s choice;
  • One movement of a concerto by Vaughan Williams, Edward Gregson, or equivalent.

Graduate studies

  • Major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales and arpeggios in all keys, at different tempi spanning the whole range of the tuba;
  • Two contrasting studies from the following: Arban Études caractéristiques, Bousquet/Popiel 36 Celebrated Studies for the tuba, Snedecor Low Etudes for Tuba, Bordogni 24 Etudes, or equivalent;
  • Five contrasting orchestral excerpts of the applicant’s choice;
  • Solo repertoire: Sonata by Thomas Beversdorf or Concerto by Eugène Bozza (1996), or equivalent.
